James Murley Testifies at Florida Meeting of
U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy

James Murley, Director of the FAU Joint Center for Environmental and Urban Problems, recently testified before the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy at their joint Florida-Caribbean Regional Meeting in St. Petersburg on February 22d. He represented the Florida Ocean Alliance and spoke on Florida’s ocean policy and its development and integration with federal laws and programs. In particular, he focused on the importance of partnerships such as the Florida Ocean Alliance to help maintain healthy oceans and a healthy state economy. The Alliance is a public-private partnership of members from port and cruise industry, developers, and marine research institutes.

The Alliance helped coordinate visits by Commissioners to hear ocean experts as part of the Commission’s site visits to Florida’s key ocean-related facilities on February 21st. The presidential Commission is touring the nation’s coastal regions to gather information on U.S. coastal policies so that they can develop a comprehensive federal ocean policy to preserve the oceans and their resources. Their report and recommendations are due in spring of 2003 to Congress and the President. More information on the Commission is available at http://oceancommission.gov.
