Jim Murley has been Director of the Joint Center for
Environmental and Urban Problems at Florida Atlantic University/Florida
International University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, since February
1999. The mission of the Joint Center is to work with policy makers and
the public in their pursuit of options for managing growth while
preserving natural systems, promoting a strong economy and planning
liveable communities.
Jim is past Secretary of the Florida Department of Community Affairs where he served from 1995 to 1998 under the late Governor Lawton Chiles. During that time he was also appointed Vice Chair of the Florida Governor's Ocean Committee and is one of the founding members of the Florida Ocean Alliance. Jim helped draft and implement Florida's landmark Growth Management Act while at the Florida Department of Community Affairs and as Executive Director of 1000 Friends of Florida. Before coming to Florida, he worked for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in coastal zone management. Jim spent six years with NOAA where he directed the Gulf/Island Region (southeast United States, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands), headed the state coastal zone management program office and was NOAA's liaison with the U.S. Congress on ocean and coastal issues. He is a 1974 graduate of George Washington University Law School where he specialized in environmental and land-use law. Jim is a member of the Miami River Commission, the Legislative Committee on Intergovernmental Relations, a member of the Board of Directors of the Congress for New Urbanism, the Seaside Institute and a fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration. |
